Nature As Art Photography

Bio of John Kurczak

John Kurczak first started photography as a hobby in his teens. A renewed interest was later sparked by his curiosity with digital photography and the creative capabilities of the digital darkroom. In 2003, John purchased a digital camera and pursued his interest of digital photography based on hands-on, self-learning. John joined the Artists on Elgin in 2004 where his work is currently featured. His work was also exhibited by the Sudbury Arts Council in 2003/2004 for several months. John, partnering with Gwen Doyle who works in pen & ink, pencil and acrylics, participated in the SCARF 2005 Fall Studio Tour. This year, John & Gwen will be appearing in the "ARTS 9 Experience.. Vive La Difference!" SCARF 2006 Fall Tour at Fielding Park. John is also on display at several prominent Sudbury business locations: Financial Decisions Inc. In 2005, John participated successfully in a fund raiser for the Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario and in 2006 John donated a photo for the Arthritis Society fund raising auction.

Digital photography allows the artist to control the processing of images from creating the original photo to printing the final print by way of colour and vibrancy. This process allows the artist greater freedom to create his artistic vision. Challenges include; the use of light to implement lines, shapes, form, texture, pattern and colour to produce powerful compositions. Oftentimes, the end result of John’s work is a photograph that appears much like a painting.

John’s inspiration comes from the dazzling natural beauty of Mother Earth wherein he enjoys taking photos of birds, animals, landscapes and abstract nature. John is also influenced by the works of Tom Thompson and the Group of Seven, Arthur Morris, Ansel Adams, John Shaw, Art Wolfe and Freeman Patterson.
